Dancing Together, But Individually

Besides the fact that hosting a silent rave is totally awesome, this article brings up some very good points about isolationism that we discussed in class. The article references philosopher Allan Bloom's prediction that the Walkman "would contribute to a decline in civility". In a world where no one would dare go anywhere without their ipod, is a silent rave really just celebrating isolationism? If instead of reading your local news, you just get your world news online, are you isolating yourself from your community? Why go out and talk to someone when you have the whole world right at your fingertips?

That's a great article...but I don't think it's promoting isolationism. It's promoting getting out and discovering your own niche.
Becoming addicted to things like ipods might just be a side effect of discovering your own niche.

I feel that with the news that you get, you should be able to go out and be a participant in your community. It is true that you have the whole world at your fingertips, but a computer screen is not the same as getting out there helping people out.

I think that as long as you have a healthy mix between getting the news in your own time and experiencing the world for yourself it is for your benefit. I don't think being addicted to an ipod means that you are isolating yourself from the world--as long as that is not all you do.
